AMD World Championship Sturgis 2011 Show Results

Japanese bike builder Ken Tabata came to Sturgis as an unknown to win the 2011 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building, on Wed., Aug. 10th. Tabata of Tavax Engineering, Yao City, Osaka, worked for more than 3 years on "TAVAX 2011V," a bike with dynamic movement and power, "designed to look like a Cheetah about to pounce."

Top 3 in the Freestyle class: Satya Kraus of Kraus Motor Co (left) (3rd place), newly-crowned World Champion Ken Tabata of Tavax Engineering (center) and Larry Houghton of Lamb Engineering (2nd place).    Click images to enlarge.

TAVAX2011V effortlessly combines sculpted aluminum bodywork with one-off hand-made pieces that form the suspension and replace the stock engine and transmission covers. At the rear of the bike the swingarm pivots from behind the rear cylinder, arcing over the transmission, and carrying a linkage system operated single shock, a design similar to that found on many modern sports bikes.

At the front of the machine the suspension begins at the axle as a leading link fork, which then changes via a pair of links to finish as a Springer fork.

To demonstrate the performance potential of his bike Ken has forgone tall and wide wheels, favoring instead a pair of Marchesini 17in sport bike rims carrying floating rotors and Lockheed brake calipers.

Taking a less complex styling route, Larry Houghton, of Lamb Engineering, secured second place with Son of a Gun. Based around a 1951 BSA single cylinder engine (found on eBay) and Talon motocross wheels. Larry built the rest of the bike himself, often collecting material from the scrap bins of friends in the engineering trade. His careful recycling of material meant that he was able to build a World Class custom motorcycle for less than $9,000, including the gold candy silver metalflake paint wrap.

Third place winner Satya Kraus believes in the bare essentials, aptly demonstrated by his entry, "Bolide." He achieved his aim by putting a 93ci S&S Shovelhead motor in a one-off frame carrying a mono-shocked swingarm, telescopic forks and 17in Alpina spoked wheels shod with Metzeler sport bike tires.
1st Place - Performance Custom Class was won by Jim Giuffra and the girls of AFT Customs, who rebuilt a 1970 Honda CB750 café racer styled custom, complete with RaceTech suspension, Beringer brakes and numerous one-off pieces.
1st Place, Production Class: The influence that café racers are having on the current custom scene can also be seen in the design of the top placed Production Manufacturer class bike. Best known for its line of Chops and Bobbers, Darwin Motorcycles has built what it describes as an American muscle bike. Powered by a 132ci S&S X-Wedge V-twin, the RLX carries a full range of top spec components including Öhlins suspension, Beringer brakes and BST carbon fiber wheels.

Italian Sidecar Bike wins AMD Modified Harley Class: A first in 2011 for the World Championship was the entry of a sidecar outfit and it was this outfit, Abnormal Cycles' Union, that took the honors in the Modified Harley class. The Model 'U' powered outfit features a stock frame fitted with a custom sidecar body and a leaf spring Indian style front end, which includes a pair of handlebars created to also look like a leaf spring.

The World Championship of Custom Bike Building exists to showcase and promote international custom motorcycle design and engineering quality, craftsmanship and innovation; and to promote the evolution of custom motorcycling in ways that will help secure the unique enjoyment of custom motorcycles for future generations of riders.

The World Championship is a free-public-admission four-day event that opens on the first Sunday of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, culminating in an awards ceremony at 3:00 pm MST on the Wednesday of the Rally. The whole event, including the awards ceremony, is broadcast on the internet and you will find photos of all of the top bikes at www.AMDChampionship.com.

Best Trike - Lithuania 2011 Super Rally

This trike by Virginijus Mickevicius took Best of Show/Trikes at the Lituania 2011 FH-DCE Super Rally. Every year the Super Rally is staged in June in a different country, organized by a different member club of the Federation of Harley-Davidson Clubs, Europe.

This year's FH-DCE Super Rally® was June 9 to 13 on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

Harley-Davidson riders in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium used to meet in the 1960's at the Pinster Rally, organized by the Harley Netherlands' club, H-D C Utrecht.

In 1973, the Pinster Rally was renamed "Super Rally" with plans for a Paris Super Rally in 1974. Those plans failed, but there was a Super Rally the following year in Kastelree, Belgium.

Rally fans will probably return home from the 2011 Lituanian Super Rally with pieces of Amber that can be found along the shoreline.
Next up in Europe is the FH-DCE's PIT STOP Super Rally in Poland.

July 15 to 17, 2011

Kickstands Up 2011 Begins With 100 Miles of NC Twisties

Decorate your bike in pink or "ride naked" to the Kickstands Up 2011 launch ride on Saturday, June 18 that begins at Motorcycles of Charlotte and takes in 100 miles of twisties to Robbinsville, North Carolina.

"Sunday morning we’ll ride Tail of the Dragon and then I’ll keep going to Chattanooga, TN — you’re welcome to go as far as you’d like with me," said Tamela Rich, from her blog "Leaning into Life."

The middle-aged motorcycle adventurer, who took up riding at age 48, will be blogging down the highway, learning "lessons from the road" on a "Conga" across 20 US states and 4 Canadian provinces to raise money and awareness for "The Cause" -- breast cancer research. She will travel about 10,000 miles before her "Kickstands Down" on July 28th.

Conga for the Cause is an ad-hoc fundraising and awareness-building initiative by Canadian and American motorcyclists who raise money in the fight against breast cancer. It’s called “Conga” because it resembles a Conga Line (you may have joined one at a wedding) where people drop in and out as the line snakes around the ball room.

It all begins at 9am June 18th 2011 with coffee and donuts at Motorcycles of Charlotte.

"Motorcycles of Charlotte has graciously provided us with a ride captain, Rich Lodge, who will place us in manageable groups, provide maps, etc. Please email him directly if you plan to ride with us so he knows what kind of crowd he’s in for. Also, if you’d like to take advantage of the group rate we have at the Microtel, go through Rich," said Tam.. the details are on her blog.

Bling your bike!

Please consider decorating your bike in honor of The Cause (breast cancer research) because Motorcycles of Charlotte will donate $25 for every decorated bike!

"If you decide to “ride naked” I ask that you donate $25," said Tam. "Decorated bikes are a great way to raise awareness and money for a disease that afflicts one out of every eight women."

Tam’s Conga 2011 Itinerary:

Kickstands UP 6/18 to Robbinsville, NC 240 miles.
Sunday, 6/19 Begins with Tail of the Dragon, passes through Chattanooga, TN ends in Florence, AL, 300 miles.
Monday, 6/20 en route to Dallas area (Irving), TX.
Tuesday-Wednesday 6/22 with Conga rider Jenni in Irving, TX.

Sat, 6/25 layover w Dusty, fundraiser for The Cause. Will be with Dusty until Wyoming.
Sun, 6/26 Flagstaff, AZ 430 miles.
Mon , 6/27 San Bernadino, CA 485 miles.
Tues, 6/28 to Thursday, June 30 PCH to San Francisco, meetup with Christina Shook and the San Francisco Motorcycle Club.
Monday, 7/4 leave San Francisco for Canada. Meet Nadine in Portland, OR 7/6 or 7/7.
Thursday, 7/14 Arrive Shell/Greybull WY for Conga meetup. Christina Shook will join us there to photograph us.
7/22 Winnipeg, Manitoba with Baha’i friends. From there I’ll head to St. Paul, MN and ride along the mighty Mississippi River to Iowa then cut inland via Indiana to make my way home in Charlotte.
7/28 Kickstands DOWN at Carolina Breast Friends’ Pink House between 5-6pm.

Best 15 Motorcycle Roadways in the USA

This month's issue of the American Motorcyclist magazine, published by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) ranks the top 15 scenic highways and byways across the USA, as chosen by AMA members. Four are in California but the most popular ride is Beartooth Highway through Montana and Wyoming.

* I have personally been on more than a half dozen of these scenic motorcycle roadways, including the North Pacific Coast Highway in California where this photo was taken at Big Sur. Other photos were also taken on vacation in California in 2009.

"When it comes to the best places in the country to ride motorcycles, no group of riders is more knowledgeable than AMA members," said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. "No group puts in more miles, samples more asphalt or rides more roads.

"By publicizing our favorite roads in American Motorcyclist magazine, AMA members will seek out these destinations and bring tourism dollars into local communities through the purchase of food, fuel, lodging and more," Dingman said.

The editors of American Motorcyclist magazine used the 230,000-member, non-profit association's website, AmericanMotorcyclist.com, to accept nominations and tally votes for members' favorite roads. Nearly 100 roads made the ballot, and the magazine published the top 15 roads in the April issue as well as a list of "honorable mentions."

"Some of these roads are familiar to motorcyclists, and others may not be," said Managing Editor James Holter. "They all have one thing in common: They're the best roads in the country, as chosen by AMA members."

A countdown of the top 15 routes:

15. Washington Route 129 and Oregon Route 3, Clarkston, Wash., to Enterprise, Ore.
14. Ohio Route 170, Calcutta to Poland.
13. California Route 58, McKittrick to Santa Margarita.
12. U.S. Route 33, Harrisonburg, Va., to Seneca Rocks, W.Va.
11. Natchez Trace, from Natchez, Miss., to Nashville, Tenn.
10. Angeles Crest Highway, California Route 2.
9. U.S. Route 12, Lolo Pass, Idaho and Montana.
8. California Route 36.
7. Cherohala Skyway, North Carolina and Tennessee.
6. Going to the Sun Road, Glacier National Park, Montana.
5. California Route 1, Pacific Coast Highway.
4. U.S. Route 550, from Ouray to Durango, Colo.
3. U.S. Route 129 -- The Tail of the Dragon -- on the North Carolina-Tennessee border.
2. Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina.
1. Beartooth Highway, Montana and Wyoming.

Honorable mentions:
•Highway 12, Colorado
•Route 191, 180, 78, Arizona, New Mexico
•U.S. 191 (Alpine to Morenci) Arizona
•U.S. 16A (South Dakota)
•U.S. 50, Nevada
•Farm to Market 336, Texas

* We also loved everything about the scenic roadways in Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona, Nevada and West Virginia. Wyoming is our next place to visit.

Live To Ride, Ride to Live... Live Your Dreams

"Live to Ride, Ride to Live ... Live Your Dreams" has never been better expressed, in my estimation, than in this video based on the true story of a group of "Dream Rangers," average age 81!!

These five senior riders in Taiwan prepared for six months and road for 13 days together, night and day, 1,139 kilometers from the North to the South of Taiwan. One has hearing problems, one has cancer, three have heart disease, all have degenerative arthritis. Why did they do it?
To keep their dreams alive!!

As one of the more than 1.7 million viewers commented, "my husband has cancer, but when we ride, cancer doesn't ride with us." Here's the video.

Motorcycle USA's New Interactive "Ride Guide"

Locate a street ride, race track, drag strip, motocross track, dirt bike ride or OHV park anywhere in the USA with the Motorcycle USA Ride Guide.

I got their press release yesterday, and I would definetly recommend that you check out this new ride guide that is powered by a GPS sponsor. The press release is below.

I always read the Rat's Hole Custom Bike Show reviews by Bryan Harley at MotorcycleUSA.com. But I have also bookmarked this guide page. It's excellent.

Motorcycle USA announces the release of its Motorcycle Ride Guide, a one-stop, comprehensive tool for finding new riding destinations throughout the country. An interactive experience, the Motorcycle Ride Guide allows users to upload information about their own favorite local stretches of asphalt.

Motorcycle-USA.com’s Ride Guide is an invaluable resource for all riding styles. From short jaunts around the local countryside to long-distance tours Motorcycle-USA’s new Ride Guide has it all. Along with street routes, the Ride Guide includes listings for local race tracks and drag strips. Dirt riders are covered too, with listings of Motocross Parks, as well as OHV trail riding locations.

Motorcyclists looking for a riding destination can search by riding style and state to find all the vital information needed for their next two-wheeled adventure, including ride descriptions, points of interest, directions, elevation and terrain. Listings also include a downloadable map from Motorcycle-USA.com’s Ride Guide partner, Ride with GPS.

“We enlisted the folks from Ride with GPS for their mapping skills and as you can imagine, they were instrumental in allowing us to offer this new feature on Motorcycle-USA.com. These types of sites have been popular among mountain bikers and hikers so we figured it would be a natural fit for motorcycle riders as well,” said Motorcycle-USA Editor-in-Chief Ken Hutchison.

Motorcycle-USA.com’s Ride Guide will encourage riders to share their favorite roads, add points of interest, comment on a ride or add their own tidbits of advice about a particular route. User-friendly and technologically savvy, the new Ride Guide is bound to be a valuable resource for riders of all types.

“We’ve wanted to provide a place for riders to find and share rides so other motorcyclists have the opportunity to enjoy roads they might not have known about otherwise,” Hutchison adds. “I expect Ride Guide to be popular right away and I hope to see everyone contribute by submitting their favorite rides as well. We have over one thousand rides already in the system and are loading more each day. Once we start getting the public submitting rides too, there will be a ton more rides for people to enjoy so come check it out.” Find your next riding destination courtesy of Motorcycle-USA.com’s Ride Guide.

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge announced today that Harley-Davidson Motor Company will provide marketing and promotional support for the 2011 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge.

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge will present the world’s greatest long distance endurance motorcycle event in August of 2011. "The new direction of being more about a personal test of touring endurance, where rider and machine stretch the boundaries of long-distance touring, appeals to us. It’s a perfect match for the superior touring experience and capabilities of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. 'Hoka Hey' translates to 'It's a good day to ride!' and that is always the case on a Harley."

"The Hoka Hey is about being the greatest endurance motorcycle event ever held and we are very excited to become associated with the greatest motorcycles ever built," said Jim Red Cloud, founder of the Hoka Hey Challenge. "Harley-Davidson's support and guidance will certainly enhance this ambitious event."
