Best Trike - Lithuania 2011 Super Rally

This trike by Virginijus Mickevicius took Best of Show/Trikes at the Lituania 2011 FH-DCE Super Rally. Every year the Super Rally is staged in June in a different country, organized by a different member club of the Federation of Harley-Davidson Clubs, Europe.

This year's FH-DCE Super Rally® was June 9 to 13 on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

Harley-Davidson riders in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium used to meet in the 1960's at the Pinster Rally, organized by the Harley Netherlands' club, H-D C Utrecht.

In 1973, the Pinster Rally was renamed "Super Rally" with plans for a Paris Super Rally in 1974. Those plans failed, but there was a Super Rally the following year in Kastelree, Belgium.

Rally fans will probably return home from the 2011 Lituanian Super Rally with pieces of Amber that can be found along the shoreline.
Next up in Europe is the FH-DCE's PIT STOP Super Rally in Poland.

July 15 to 17, 2011

Isle of Man TT Zero Is Proving Ground For MotoCzysz

Two American companies have again used the annual TT Zero electric motorcycle race at the British Isle of Man to spotlight Remy Electric Motors HVH 250™ and the MotoCzysz D1g1tal Dr1ve power system by capturing first and second place wins and setting another race course record on the 37.73-mile Isle of Man (IOM) mountain course.

First, here are video highlights of the 2011 Isle of Man TT Races, considered the most important in the world. This year, during the two week TT festival, more than 800,000 unique users in 201 countries visited the iomtt.com website. John McGuinness came from behind to take his 17th TT victory in the final race on Friday, June 10th setting a new Race Record time of 1:45.45.80, beating Steve Plater’s 2009 time.

In the annual TT Zero electric motorcycle race at the Isle of Man on June 9th, MotoCzysz bikes designed and manufactued in the USA captured both the top speed and overall course speed records. MotoCzysz' 2011 model posted a top speed of 149.5mph, beating the 2010 top speed of 135mph. The machine also set a course record with an average lap speed of 99.604mph.

After a record-setting win last year using Remy HVH250 technology in the MotoCzysz proprietary D1g1tal Dr1ve (DD1) power system, MotoCzysz entered its 2010 E1pc machine in the 2011 race. In addition, MotoCzysz ran a new E1pc model, also using Remy's HVH250 technology in the DD1, to complete the 2011 "Segway MotoCzysz" Team. The new bike, ridden by Michael Rutter, placed first, with the 2010 model, ridden by Mark Miller, placing second. Launched in 2009, the TT Zero is a clean-emissions speed race of electric motorcycles that make one lap around the 37.73-mile Isle of Man (IOM) mountain course.

"Our close relationship with Remy is resulting in electric drives that are leading the industry. The core technology from the Remy HVH250, around which we have built our D1g1tal Dr1ve, performed flawlessly at the IOM the last 2 years. We were thrilled to return to the podium with first and second place finishes in the race and set course speed records along the way," said MotoCzysz CEO Michael Czysz. "Remy continues to be the perfect choice for us. The HVH 250 has superior power and torque density and its compact and lightweight design fits our D1g1tal Dr1ve on the bikes perfectly. With each race, we have pushed the Remy HVH technology harder, and it has responded with victory."

MotoCzysz (based in Portland, Oregon) and Remy (based in Pendleton, Indiana) now own the fastest three laps ever executed by an electric vehicle around the challenging mountain circuit on the IOM.

"Motorsports has been a long time proving ground for innovative technologies," noted Kevin Quinn, VP and general manager of Remy Electric Motors. "This year's zero emissions electric motorcycle race was a great opportunity to demonstrate that the 2010 win could be repeated with the Remy electric HVH technology and MotoCzysz engineering savvy. With an extraordinary victory for both its bikes at Isle of Man, MotoCzysz helped Remy show the world how strong and powerful the Remy HVH 250™ technology and DD1 are in the most demanding of racing conditions."

MotoCzysz has used HVH250 core technology to create the winning D1g1tal Dr1ve, the same core technology that resides in the HVH250 motor, available from Remy. The Remy Electric Motors HVH 250 is the next evolution of the advanced electric motor for hybrid and electric vehicle applications based on Remy's patented High Voltage Hairpin (HVH) technology. Remy's HVH technology provides dramatically improved motor performance and cooling effectiveness versus competitors. The HVH electric motor's world-class torque and power density deliver increased range in all-electric drive mode and is compact and lightweight, which contributes to vehicle efficiency.

Companies including GM, Allison, Mercedes, BMW, Amp Electric Vehicles, ZAP-Jonway, Odyne, and Alte have chosen the Remy HVH electric motor for its superior technology, reliability and the speed to market that comes with Remy's existing global production capacity. The Remy HVH electric motor technology can be integrated into a car, truck, motorcycle, large transit bus and virtually any piece of equipment that can be converted to hybrid or electric.

Today, there are more than 90,000 Remy compact HVH electric motors on the road that have been driven a combined total of over a billion miles.

Remy International, Inc. is a leading global manufacturer, remanufacturer and distributor of light duty starters and alternators and Delco Remy brand heavy-duty systems. Remy International also manufactures and distributes electric propulsion motors designed with leading edge technology and backed by the security of over a billion miles of proven reliability. In business for over 100 years, today Remy International is actively collaborating with companies throughout the world to develop innovations that are transforming the vehicle industry. Recently, Remy was recognized by the United States Department of Energy for its leadership role in the hybrid technologies space and awarded a $60 million grant under the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative.

The 2012 Isle of Man races are scheduled for May 28th to June 8th.

Chrome Horse Saloon, Cedar Rapids, IA

Our featured Bar of the Week is The Chrome Horse Saloon and Slop House in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It opened in 2004, featuring an 80 seat outdoor patio and an ice bar. The decor is pure motorcycle, and features 6 bikes hanging from the walls and rafters, including a super-rare 1911 Excelsior. Chrome Horse Saloon was well on it's way to becoming one of the top biker-friendly bars in the Midwest.

Then came the Cedar Rapids Flood of 2008. The Chrome Horse Saloon took on 12 feet of water in the devastation, and it was weeks before the owners could get in to see what they could salvage. After 9 months of hard work and determination, on March 13, 2009, Chrome Horse Saloon re-opened bigger and better! A great menu (Try the Biker Trash Pizza!), huge selection of canned, bottled and draft beers (Fat Tire on tap!), and live music, both indoors and outdoors, makes the Chrome Horse Saloon a top destination during a day of riding! They've had national acts like Hank Williams III, Blues Traveler, Jeff Healey Band and Black Oak Arkansas, and host some of the top local bands in Iowa.

The Chrome Horse Saloon is located at 1202 Third Street SE in Cedar Rapids. It's located only 27 miles from the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, and is 28 miles from the headquarters of  J & P Cycles,  where they're holding their annual Open House June 25th and 26th. If you are ever in the biker Mecca that is eastern Iowa, stop in to the Chrome Horse Saloon! You'll be glad you did! Tell them Jeff from Bars4Bikers.com sent you!

Broken Spoke Saloon - Laconia, NH

Our featured biker bar of the week is the Broken Spoke Saloon in Laconia, NH. This week is the 88th Anniversary of the nation's oldest bike rally, Laconia Motorcycle Week, and the Broken Spoke is once again one of the top destinations for the thousands of people who invade this beautiful New England lakeside town.

The Broken Spoke is billed as the Largest Biker Bar in the World, and with 2 locations in Sturgis, plus one each in Laconia, Daytona, Myrtle Beach; who's to argue? Their Laconia location is only open during the spring and summer, but they make up quickly for lost time, starting this year with a Cinco de Mayo Bash. Over this past winter, they moved the stage inside, where live bands will be playing every weekend throughout the season. They've added outside picnic tables and horseshoe pits, with more exciting changes to come this summer! Also, new selections have been added to the already stacked menu (try the Buffalo Fries!) and always have ice cold beer ready for those hot summer afternoon rides!

If you're heading to Laconia for Motorcycle Week, make sure your party includes the Broken Spoke! This week they've got contests, tribute bands, the Jagermeister Girls, Jeremiah Weed giveaways and oil wrestling. If that's not messy enough for you, they top off the week on Saturday night with comedian Gallagher!

Broken Spoke Saloon is open Thursday through Monday From May through September. It's located at 1072 Watson Road (Rt. 3), next to FunSpot. There's never a cover charge! So, grab a cold beer from a hot barmaid, get some Skid Lids or a bowl of Crankcase Chowda and check out all the bikes. It's not just a bar, it's an experience! Tell them Jeff from Bars4bikers.com sent you!

Kickstands Up 2011 Begins With 100 Miles of NC Twisties

Decorate your bike in pink or "ride naked" to the Kickstands Up 2011 launch ride on Saturday, June 18 that begins at Motorcycles of Charlotte and takes in 100 miles of twisties to Robbinsville, North Carolina.

"Sunday morning we’ll ride Tail of the Dragon and then I’ll keep going to Chattanooga, TN — you’re welcome to go as far as you’d like with me," said Tamela Rich, from her blog "Leaning into Life."

The middle-aged motorcycle adventurer, who took up riding at age 48, will be blogging down the highway, learning "lessons from the road" on a "Conga" across 20 US states and 4 Canadian provinces to raise money and awareness for "The Cause" -- breast cancer research. She will travel about 10,000 miles before her "Kickstands Down" on July 28th.

Conga for the Cause is an ad-hoc fundraising and awareness-building initiative by Canadian and American motorcyclists who raise money in the fight against breast cancer. It’s called “Conga” because it resembles a Conga Line (you may have joined one at a wedding) where people drop in and out as the line snakes around the ball room.

It all begins at 9am June 18th 2011 with coffee and donuts at Motorcycles of Charlotte.

"Motorcycles of Charlotte has graciously provided us with a ride captain, Rich Lodge, who will place us in manageable groups, provide maps, etc. Please email him directly if you plan to ride with us so he knows what kind of crowd he’s in for. Also, if you’d like to take advantage of the group rate we have at the Microtel, go through Rich," said Tam.. the details are on her blog.

Bling your bike!

Please consider decorating your bike in honor of The Cause (breast cancer research) because Motorcycles of Charlotte will donate $25 for every decorated bike!

"If you decide to “ride naked” I ask that you donate $25," said Tam. "Decorated bikes are a great way to raise awareness and money for a disease that afflicts one out of every eight women."

Tam’s Conga 2011 Itinerary:

Kickstands UP 6/18 to Robbinsville, NC 240 miles.
Sunday, 6/19 Begins with Tail of the Dragon, passes through Chattanooga, TN ends in Florence, AL, 300 miles.

West Coast Art Show Features Classic & Rare Motorcycles

Dozens of classic motorcycles of all brands and eras will be on display through July 23rd at Coos Art Museum in the south coastal town of Coos Bay, Oregan. The "Thunder in CAM" exhibit opens with a reception on Friday night, June 10th 2011.

Featured motorcycles will include such rarities as a 1914 Cyclone, one of only three known to exist, and such all time classic motorcycles as the 1948 Indian Chief. The show will also feature an overview of Harley-Davidsons from 1911 through 2011.

The "Thunder in CAM" exhibit will also include 62 pieces of contemporary motorcycle art work produced by 35 artists. The invited artists come from 15 states and Canada. The art includes a variety of media from photography to wire sculputure.

The Cyclone Motorcycle manufactured by Joerns Motor Manufacturing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota had a brief but illustrious career lasting from 1912 through 1917. It left its mark primarily on the board track and dirt track racing circuits of the early 1900s. In 1914, a Cyclone took the one-mile speed record title away from the famed Excelsior motorcycle – also on view in this exhibition. The Cyclones typically painted in Joerns' signature canary-yellow color are visually striking examples of early vintage motorcycles.

The 1948 Indian Chief Motorcycle with its trademark skirted fenders and gold trim is an American classic. With its low, thundering sound, it was one of those bikes that you’d hear before you saw it. The Chief was the last attempt to save the Indian company from the financial troubles it experienced after World War II. The Chief had the style, power, and technology to be one the finest motorcycles of its time.

"Thunder at CAM" (Coos Art Museum) promises to be a major motorcycle and art event, with numerous motorcycle related artifacts and art work occupying both floors of the Museum. The show will open with a reception from 5 to 7 pm on Friday, June 10th that is open to the public.

Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies an historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay and is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4pm on Saturday.

18th Miracle Ride Around the Indy 500 Track

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is celebrating 100 years of racing that will include the 18th Annual Miracle Ride on June 5th to raise money for the Riley Children's Hospital. More than 5,000 motorcyclists will enjoy the magic of riding around the historic Indy 500 track in a Sunday morning parade lead by the Indiana Motorcycle Drill Team. The Miracle Ride is a two-day event that includes a poker run and bike show on Saturday, as well as an auction, raffle and concert on Sunday.

"Over the past 17 years, the Miracle Ride has raised over $3 million for Riley Hospital and hopes to bring in another $400,000 in 2011," said Holly Farabough, director of marketing and sponsorship for Miracle Ride Foundation.

James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children is Indiana's first and only comprehensive children's hospital, saving lives and helping thousands of children every year. Many of the life saving programs at Riley are ranked as some of the top programs in the nation, setting a benchmark for other programs that help children. Riley is a not-for-profit hospital, so it relies heavily on donations from outside sources.

The Bob & Tom Show - nationally syndicated radio show presents the Miracle Ride.

On Saturday the 4th the Miracle Ride kicks off with six poker runs with starting locations all over the state of Indiana. All poker runs will end at the Wyndham Indianapolis West Hotel, where the winners of each poker run will compete for six major prizes. The Wyndham will also be host of a Miracle Ride bike show and silent auction. Vendors will be available and there will be live music until Midnight.

On the morning of Sunday June 5th, 5,000 plus Miracle Ride participants will gather at Allison Transmission. Bob & Tom from the Bob & Tom Radio Show will be on stage introducing guest speakers, giving some special presentations, and of course making everyone laugh. The Indianapolis Motorcycle Drill Team will perform and then participants will rev their engines for a very big parade ride.

The ride will leave Allison Transmission for a lap around the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It will then go past Riley Hospital for Children where doctors, nurses, families, and the children who are able, wave to all the riders and hold up signs of gratitude. This is a very touching moment that can bring you tears and definitely makes you feel good for supporting the cause.

The ride will end in Shelbyville, Indiana outside Indiana Live! Casino. Every participant will receive a complimentary lunch. Then Bob & Tom will do a live auction, announce the winners of the grand prize and most money raised prize, and the totals for the weekend will be announced. To end, anyone over 21 will be invited into the Casino to determine the winners of the Miracle Ride Raffle items.

It is a $50 minimum pledge per person to participate in the Miracle Ride. With this minimum pledge, adult participants receive access to all events both days, Sunday lunch, Saturday night camping, and an event t-shirt. Participants will also receive one chance at the grand prize, which is a 1200cc Harley-Davidson Sportster. For each interval of $50 donated, participants receive a chance at this grand prize. The individual who donates the most money to the Miracle Ride will receive a 2011 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883. Children who pledge $25 are eligible for a TTR 110 Yamaha or an Agility Kymco 50cc Scooter. Children under eight are free and children 8-15 pay $25 to participate.

Major sponsors of the Miracle Ride include: Lucas Oil Products, Inc.; The Indianapolis Colts; The Bob & Tom Radio Show; AAA Insurance; Allison Transmission, Inc.; UAW Local 933; Indiana Live! Casino; and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
