A new exhibit at the Harley-Davidson Museum is proof the Milwaukee motorcycle maker is about much more than its classic hogs.

Bikes on the Bay

.

By Cathy Kelly

Capitola -- Old motorcycles found new appreciation Sunday at the Bikes on the Bay vintage show at the Capitola Mall.

The collection of old bikes drew hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Capitola Mall parking lot Sunday. Orchestrated by the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce, the sixth annual event has been at the mall for four years and is growing, chamber Director Toni Castro said.

"It's seems to be going very well," Castro said, over sounds of laughter, music and motors. The event included vendors, too, along with an impressive array of vintage motorcycles and some scooters. Ringing the event were the motorcycles of those who rode in to see the officially displayed motorcycles... Read more

1938 Brough Superior Best of Show at Quail

.

The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, an avenue for motorcycle collectors, custom bike builders and enthusiasts to showcase immaculately restored vintage and historically significant motorcycles, was a roaring success this weekend. The intimate gathering at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club had an excellent turnout. The motorcycles entered in the concours were as varied and creative as their owners. Guest judges like The Vintagent’s Paul d’Orleans and the esteemed Kevin Cameron of Cycle World fame had their hands full as many bikes were worthy of the vaunted “Best of Show” title. But it was the Rolls Royce of motorcycles, an immaculate 1938 Brough Superior SS-80 owned by Gene Brown out of Colorado which took top laurels. The classic Brough impressed us even more when it fired up on the first kick when Brown rode it off stage. We’ll share the full experience of the Gathering with you later this week, but until then here’s a peek at the winner along with a list of winners in all categories... read more

Vintage bikes shine

.

The Albany Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club Hill Climb on Mt Clarence attracted 86 competitors on Sunday.

Riding a variety of bikes ranging from the oldest, a 1926 Norton 500, to the youngest, a 1980 Honda 125, they competed in three groups to first record their best time.

This then had to at least be equalled for any chance to win.

The motorbikes started on Apex Drive then screamed their way, often in a cloud of smoke, up to the Mounted Corps memorial.

Two of the rarest bikes on the day were Rob Berryman’s 1974 Laverda 750 and the 1979 Hagon 500 Special ridden by Derek Kelly, one of only two believed to be in Australia.

Alan Auburn’s 1927 Harley Davidson 350 last competed in a race in 1939.

Motorcycle meeting held in town

.

By: Jeremy Nolais via : cochraneeagle.com

Vintage motorcycle enthusiasts from across Canada rolled into the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre for a historic gathering Oct. 23.

More than 50 individuals gathered for the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group’s (CVMG) 2010 annual general meeting — the first in the group’s 43-year history to be held west of Ontario.

Bob Wardle, who has lived just north of Cochrane for 30 years, took part in the day’s festivities and was extremely pleased to see the meeting held so close to home.

“These guys are real enthusiasts,” Wardle said of the attendees, who were representing vintage motorcycle delegations from every province.

“All they’re interested in is preserving history.”

Wardle’s prized possession is a 1949 MK 1 Trojan, which he acquired shortly after the Second World War. He explained that, because factory production was slow following the war effort, a British company developed a motor that could be used on a bicycle and the MK 1 Trojan was born.

“You got 200 miles to a gallon of gas at 25 miles an hour, and gas was 14 cents a gallon,” Wardle proudly recalled, adding his wife won’t allow him to own more than three bikes at a time, and therefore the others he has restored are on display in museums.

Harley-Davidson Museum Hosts Cannonball Run Exhibit

.

Via : www.motorcyclecruiser.com

What's it like to ride coast-to-coast on a 1914 Harley-Davidson at a top speed of 25 miles per hour on today's roads? Over a 16-day period this past September, Bill Rodencal, Harley-Davidson Museum Motorcycle Restorer/Conservator, joined 70 other antique motorcycle racers in riding from Kitty Hawk, NC, to Santa Monica, CA, to find out. On October 22, Bill will share stories from his cross-country adventure at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. Hosted by Jim Fricke, H-D Museum Curatorial Director, the program will feature Bill's experiences and photographs of the motorcycles, people and places of this amazing journey.

The world's first Motorcycle Cannonball Run kicked off its coast-to-coast journey in September, 2010. Unlike other cross-country races though, this one was run on vintage metal. The brainchild of Lonnie Isam, Jr., owner of Jurassic Racing in Sturgis, South Dakota, the event required participants to ride classic pre-1916 motorcycles such as Pope, Sears, Flying Merkel, Indian, Triumph, or Harley-Davidson's Silent Grey Fellow. The machine must be powered by an original engine: updates could be made for safety's sake, but the core of the motorcycle must be 95 years or older.

Bay to Birdwood

.

The Bay to Birdwood Run was first held in 1980 when the Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs, SAS Channel Ten and the National Motor Museum were invited to join in developing an event to commemorate the issuing of the first South Australian driver's licence to Dr William A. Hargreaves back in 1906.

The original agreed concept was a biennial run for pre-1950 vehicles from Glenelg (fondly known as "the Bay") to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood.

By 1990 the Run had established itself as Australia's premier historic motoring event and had earned Australia wide recognition by winning the National Tourism Award as the best special event or festival staged in Australia.

The Run is the largest most continually staged historic motoring event held anywhere in the world. Vehicles must be pre-1956 and meet entry criteria.

Australia, because of the survival rate of old vehicles, has become internationally recognised as one of the world's major storehouses of historic vehicles. South Australia has the highest per capita rate of ownership of historic vehicles in the nation.

The advantage of having the National Motor Museum here in the Adelaide Hills, along with a well-established restoration regime, has resulted in the preservation of historic vehicles becoming an important part of the South Australian culture... Read more

Blalock, vintage motorcycle

.

By Bill Walsh
Special to the Rappahannock News
If all goes according to plan, Bill Blalock will finally get to ride a motorcycle he owned for many years without ever having cranked up the engine.

That motorcycle is one of about 80 entered in this fall’s Motorcycle Cannonball, a 17-day race from Kitty Hawk, N.C., to Santa Monica, Cal.

Blalock with the restored bike.

Blalock bought the badly neglected 1913 Excelsior in 1952 from the Washington, D.C. family of its one-time owner. That owner, a part-time racing enthusiast, had been living in a nursing home for a few years, and the bike had sat in the basement, neglected, for a number of years, Blalock said.

“[A sister] really didn’t know what it was worth and didn’t really want any money,” Blalock recalled of the purchase, and he can’t remember what he paid for it.

“It was sitting in a basement, and had been sitting there long enough that the rear stand was almost rotted off,” he said. “It was a mess.”

Blalock, founder of Blalock Cycle Co., originally in Silver Spring, Md., before its 1984 move to its present location at 170 Lee Highway in Warrenton, took it back to his shop.

“I got married in ’55, and we had a child in ’56,” Blalock recalled. “I had taken it apart and it was sitting around in boxes,” and with a demanding business and a growing family, he didn’t have much time to work on it.

His original plan was to restore the bike and ride it.

“Usually, there are a lot of parts missing,” in a project like this, Blalock said.

“I had to re-make the rear stand. The pedals were completely worn out, but you just unscrew those, just like a bicycle. I replaced the chain with Diamond chain, which is still in business today; I was able to get the same chains that were on there. The seat . . . I was able to restore the leather on it. The gas tank had pinholes all through it, but there is a chemical that you put in as a liquid and it dries and becomes a plastic-like material... read more

Festival of Jurby

.

By: John Gregory via : www.isleofman.com

Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts and families are expected to descend on Jurby Airfield this Sunday (August 29) for the Festival of Jurby.
Last year marked the inaugural festival which attracted more than 8,000 visitors and featured vintage motorcycles and other vehicles as well as attractions for all the family. It was the biggest single spectator attraction of the year.
This year the organisers are predicting in excess of 10,000 people attending the festival and have completely revamped the event to cope with the huge numbers.

It has been organised by the Isle of Man Vintage Motorcycle Club.
Secretary of the club Tony East said: "We were completely overwhelmed by the number of people last year."We thought we might attract a couple of thousand visitors if we were lucky, but we totally under-estimated how popular the event would be."
The events committee of the VMCC Isle of Man came up with the idea of holding a gathering similar to the well established VMCC Festival of 1,000 Bikes held annually at Mallory Park.

Tony added: "We were well organised and we had lots of exhibitors and an enthusiastic group of people at VMCC who worked hard and who believed in the festival, but the number of people who arrived was just amazing... Read more

Mods vs. Rockers bike rally

.

By Kimberlee Love via : www.post-gazette.com

When Larry Fletcher organized Chicago's first Mods vs. Rockers bike and scooter rally in 2005 he had a wealth of experience from which to draw. Mr. Fletcher, a beer importer and vintage bike enthusiast, had organized The Brighton Bash, a vintage bike event, at his Ace Cafe Chicago in 1997, and he continued to organize vintage bike shows and ride-ins with the 59 Club Chicago throughout the next several years.

When Laura Pliskin, a freelance art department coordinator from Pittsburgh, decided to organize Pittsburgh's first Rockers vs. Mods event (Mods vs. Rockers and Rockers vs. Mods are used somewhat interchangeably) she had no experience whatsoever. What she did have was enthusiasm for the vintage bike scene -- and for Mods and Rockers culture.

Ms. Pliskin was first exposed to British Mods and Rockers online -- Mods being tidy skinny-tie, suit-jacketed scooter riders, and Rockers being rather less tidy leather-jacketed motorcyclists, so named for their love of American rock 'n' roll. Reaching their heyday in 1960s Britain, Mods and Rockers gained notoriety after several well-publicized -- some say well-exploited -- brawls were reported by the hungry British press. Ms. Pliskin devoured everything she could read about them on the Web and remembers thinking, "How amazing to have been alive during that time, when two of motorcycling's subcultures were so dedicated to their passions."

After finding that Mods vs. Rockers events were cropping up around the country, she wondered, "Pittsburgh has the vintage bike culture, so why not have an event here?" She was already a legend in her social circle for organizing outrageous theme parties, but she knew it would take more than the idea to make an event happen. Fate stepped in when a co-worker remarked that his girlfriend, Nicole White, was starting a party planning business. The two women met and bonded instantly.

Ms. Pliskin is a motorcyclist -- she rides a 1969 Honda CB350 -- and is the self-described "idea man" of the duo. Ms. White doesn't ride, and is the more grounded of the two. Ms. Pliskin says Ms. White has been instrumental in organizing the nuts and bolts of Rockers vs. Mods Pittsburgh, securing such necessities as insurance coverage... Read more
