Staying in shape key for motocross riders

.

By John Marshall, AP Sports Writer

Kick start the bike, twist the throttle, lean and lift. That's it. Actually, it's not.
Motocross and its indoor cousin Supercross are far more demanding than most people outside the sport can possibly imagine.
How difficult?

"If anyone goes to a track and runs as hard as they can for 20 minutes, that's what it's like," says Aldon Baker, a certified trainer who specializes in working with motorcycle athletes.
That leads to another misnomer: Motocross riders simply put down their beer and cigarettes, jump on the bike and ride... Read more

Steve McQueen's California ranch for sale

.

The "King of Cool" apparently found a measure of peace in Santa Paula, Calif., where he could stash his collection of cars, planes, and motorcycles, and the locals didn't seem to think it was such a big deal that a legendary movie star was living in their midst.

Steve McQueen had largely turned away from Hollywood when he settled in the town, about 75 miles northwest of Los Angeles, in 1979. Drawn there, according to biographers, by the town's reputation as the vintage-plane capital of America, the tough-boy icon purchased a nearby 15.5-acre ranch (see slide show below) with an 1892 cottage and a 4,500-square-foot hangar that he stuffed with dirt bikes, Indian motorcycles and rare sports cars. The Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group

.

L'Association Canadienne de Motos Anciennes

The Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group (CVMG) is a non profit organization aimed at promoting the use, restoration and interest in older motorcycles and those of historic interest.

The idea of forming a group started in the autumn of 1968, when a motorcyclist named Peter Gagan mailed an invitation to fellow vintage enthusiasts to attend a meeting on November 4 at his home in Port Credit, Ont. A dozen guests arrived and agreed that it would be a good idea to continue getting together to share their interest in old bikes. At a second, larger gathering three months later, those present decided to organize a club dedicated to the use and preservation of old motorcycles.

They began a series of monthly meetings and soon settled on the name Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group, proposed by Eric Dawson as having fewer negative connotations than "motorcycle club." From the 13 who attended the first meeting, the group now has more than 1,700 members across Canada. Members today own more than 7,000 motorcycles covering 200 different makes.

The early years of the Group saw several events being organized at venues such as the Ontario Science Centre and Mosport, culminating in the organizing of the first of the highly regarded Annual Rally at the Welland MCC Grounds in 1973. It was that same year that the Group stopped “passing the crash helmet” around and established an annual fee of $5.00 for members. By 1979, the Group was registered as a non-profit organization and the basis of the current constitution was fully developed... Read more

Honda's American Vintage Fashion

.

Via : www.psfk.com

Honda began business in the US during 1959 in a small Los Angeles storefront. For the first ten years they sold fuel-efficient motorcycles before selling cars like the Civic in the 1970′s. Through the motorcycle sales in particular, the Honda brand developed a loyal following. To give customers another way to express their passion for the brand, Honda created its own clothing line with a distinctly American look.

Later this week, Honda is launching the Heritage Clothing Collection in Los Angeles which revives some of those iconic designs from the early 1970s and 1980s. Initially offered as a capsule collection, it will include limited edition logo tees, shrunken sweatshirts, Honda-branded shop shirts and a line of classic tote bags. Items will feature the heritage-inspired logos ranging from Honda’s 1959 storefront and logo, to automotive- and motorcycle-inspired logos from the 1960s to 1980s, including a reintroduced vintage 1983 ‘Honda Scooter Maniac’ logo. The collection will be sold online and at select retailers in spring 2011. Honda is looking to expand the collection in the future to include café racer leather jackets, casual wear, and more recreations of archival Honda pieces.

Honda’s aim is to keep the design and production work of the clothing in Los Angeles. Currently they are working with creative consulting agency Hubris Factory and Crate Clothing.

Honda’s Heritage Collection is the second vintage inspired clothing line from an automaker we’ve noticed this year. Lotus will debut their Originals Collection later this month during London Fashion Week... Read more

Woodies

.

A woodie is a car body style, especially a station wagon, where the rear bodywork is constructed of wood framework with infill panels of wood or painted metal.
After the demise of actual wood construction, manufacturers used simulated woodgrain sheet vinyl — sometimes augmented with three-dimensional, simulated framework — to recall wood construction.

1930s and 40s

As a variant of body-on-frame construction, woodies originated from the early (pre mid-1930s) practice of manufacturing the passenger compartment portion of a vehicle in hardwood. The woodie was popular in the United States and were produced as variants of sedans and convertibles as well as station wagons, from basic to luxury. They were typically manufactured as third-party conversions of regular vehicles — some by large, reputable coachbuilding firms and others by local carpenters and craftsmen for individual customers.

They could be austere vehicles, with side curtains in lieu of roll-up windows (e.g., the 1932 Ford) — and sold in limited numbers (e.g., Ford sold 1654 woodie wagons). Eventually, bodies constructed entirely in steel supplanted wood construction — for reasons of strength, cost and durability.

1950s and 60s

Woodies were produced in the greatest numbers before the end of the 1950s, before safety regulations would effectively have made them obsolete.

In 1950, Plymouth discontinued their woodie station wagon. Buick manufactured its last woodie in 1953. By 1955, only Ford and Mercury offered a woodie, evoking real wood with other materials including steel, plastics and DiNoc (a vinyl product). Ford offered its wood models as the Country Squire trim level in numerous model ranges from the 1940s to the 1990s.

The British Motor Corporation (BMC) offered the Morris Minor Traveller (1953-71) with wood structural components and painted aluminum infill panels — the last true mass-produced woodie. Morris' subsequent Mini Traveller (1961-69) employed steel infill panels and faux wood structural members.

Just in Style

.

Unionmade gives their Varsity Jacket collaboration ($295) with Golden Bear a refresh this fall with Melton Wool that should keep you properly warm and stylish for the colder temperatures.

The very limited collection of Hilary Tenzing Explorers (none of the watches are officially associated with Rolex) is getting closer to release and they just lifted the curtain on the first of the three watches and we think its a stunner.

Another solid release from Alden and Unionmade's custom shoe collaboration is the good ol' Workboot ($450) with an upper of tan grain bison leather with a matching goodyear welt.

Unionmade and Golden Bear collaborate again on a exclusive collection ($220-$350) just in time for the holidays. While the popular varsity jacket gets an update, the new collection adds two wool and cotton vests as well as a slim-fitting peacoat.

Bikes : Café Mania

.

By : John Cerilli

Over the past few years, I have noticed a rather dramatic increase in the café motorcycle movement around the globe. I don't really believe it ever went away...this historic 60's style from the days of the British “Rockers and Mods” and “The Ton-Up Boys” has just been quietly simmering underground.

Young, immortal teenagers (as we all were during those years) wanted not just stock, but personalized, stand-out motorcycles to ride. Less is more. Thus, clip-on handlebars, solo humped seats, rear-set foot-pegs, custom tanks, and louder-than-stock modified exhausts were the way to make you cool and FAST!

Wikipedia says this about the “Café Racer” movement:

“A classic example of this was to race from the Ace Cafe on The North Circular road in NW London to the Hanger Lane junction as it then was - it is now the more famous Hanger Lane Gyratory System - and back again.

The aim was to get back to the Ace Cafe before the record you'd put onto the jukebox had finished.

Given that some of the Eddie Cochran tunes that were in vogue at this time were less than two minutes long, the racers would have had to traverse the three miles round trip at extremely high speed - most of the time, over 100+ mph - and thus the term “Exceeding the Ton” (aka “The Ton-Up Boys”) ...
